Online Copywriting
Writing for Websites and Email newsletters is NOT the same as writing for brochures and magazines.
Why? The psychology of a surfer differs greatly to that of a reader. A surfer (or email newsletter recipient) has requested specific information, rather than had it placed in front of them. The surfer is able to interact with this information, getting as much detail as they want and they can even interact with the author.
Why does a surfer visit your site?
To find out about us, you may reply. Yes, that may be true, but the primary reason is because they have a need. They have a problem or an opportunity and they are looking for a solution.
Your copy and your aim should be focused on meeting the need, not describing your company.
A small percentage of visitors will want to know more about you, so give them a link to About Us. The majority of visitors are interested in themselves, so help them out.
Which of the following is more appealing?
| Learn about all of the benefits and rewards of membership | or | Click for membership info |
| Receive trusted advice and personalized financial solutions | or | View Financial Solutions |
| Check that you are on the right call plan | or | Call Plans |
How do you cater for a novice and an expert?
Your pages, copy and links should suit a novice surfer who does not know your business. The same options should also assist your oldest, most knowledgeable active client. The common thread is that all visitors are impatient and scan your pages.
There are many other considerations when writing copy, some of which you will find by trial and error. Other factors like setting the tone of your site, creating a website personality and using humour are best left to Digital Stream.
