Medicine from MushroomsMedicinal mushrooms have long been viewed by Asian cultures as tonics which can profoundly enhance the quality of human health, and recent studies have authenticated their traditional uses (15, 18, 33, 37, 38). The most celebrated of all the medicinal mushrooms, is the Ganoderma family of mushrooms - commonly known as ling zhi or reishi in China and Japan respectively (6, 7, 14, 15, 17, 18, 23, 39), and has received the most investigation in terms of its medicinal applications(14, 15, 18).
A mushroom of many names, such as ten-thousand year mushroom, herb of spiritual potency, and holy mushroom(15, 17, 39), ling zhi has received unparalleled adulation for thousands of years. Acclaimed as a "divine" herb (17, 19, 35) and declared as an "Elixir of Life/Immortality" (6, 17, 33), ling zhi has long been considered one of the most important herbs in Asian healing (6, 15, 17). According to the late Hiroshi Hikino, recognised as one of the world's authority on the chemistry of Asian medicinal plants, ling zhi is one of the two "most important elixirs in the Orient," the other being ginseng (17, 23).
